Financial Times :China’s new nuclear icebreaker raises US concerns
The Financial Times reported that China has increased its activities in the Arctic region as part of its “Polar Silk Road” strategy, seeking to exploit new shipping routes and the region’s natural resources.
Beijing’s latest step in this direction is the unveiling of a design for an advanced nuclear icebreaker capable of breaking through ice layers up to 2.5 meters thick.
According to the designers, the Chinese ship will be multi-purpose and will be used for polar tourism in addition to cargo transportation and logistical support.
However, the project is seen as part of China’s broader plan to build a powerful polar fleet and strengthen its strategic presence in the Arctic, a move that has raised serious concerns among American officials and analysts and is seen as a challenge to US security and economic interests in the Arctic.
