Grushko: Deployment of US long-range missiles in Germany will force Moscow to build more effective countermeasures
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko announced that if American long-range missiles are deployed on German soil, Russia will create a similar and even more effective countermeasure potential for its own defense.
Referring to the US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, he said that Russia immediately suspended the deployment of these types of missiles and emphasized that Moscow will not deploy similar systems until American systems are deployed in Europe.
Grushko added that Russia has always been ready to talk to the American side and has repeatedly conveyed its positions, but militaristic tendencies have prevailed in Europe, and what Europe is doing today is trying to create a security structure against Russia.
The diplomat warned that the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles in European Union countries would lead to a sharp escalation of tensions and a decrease in the level of security, describing this policy as “completely deadlocked.
Grushko emphasized that security cannot be formed without the principle of the indivisibility of security, meaning that no country should strengthen its security at the expense of the security of others.
He added that otherwise, instead of a balance of reasonable deterrence, we will face a balance of threat and counter-threat.
These statements come as the German Embassy in Moscow confirmed on Wednesday that Berlin is committed to the plan to deploy American missiles in 2026, and that this issue is being pursued based on the joint US-German statement of July 10, 2024.
It was previously reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz would travel to the United States in early March to meet with Donald Trump and discuss bilateral and security issues.
