Canada and France’s strategic presence in Greenland, simultaneous opening of consulates in Nuuk

Greenland, Canada and France opened their diplomatic consulates in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Friday, amid Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about America’s interest in annexation.

The opening ceremony of the Canadian Consulate was attended by Anita Anand (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Mary Simon, Governor of Canada; Anand emphasized that Canada will stand with the people of Greenland and Denmark on issues of defense, security, economic resilience, and bilateral relations.

Mary Simon also emphasized maintaining a “tradition of cooperation and mutual respect” and said Canada firmly supports the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future. Canadian officials announced that the decision to open the consulate in 2024 had been made before Trump’s statements.

At the same time, France opened the first diplomatic mission of an EU member state in Greenland, a move described as supporting Danish sovereignty and strengthening security in the Arctic region.
