Russia calls US naval blockade of Venezuela ‘piracy’

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova compared the US actions in the naval blockade and seizure of Venezuelan ships to “piracy and banditry.”

“Today, we are witnessing complete lawlessness in the Caribbean, where the theft of other people’s property, long-forgotten piracy and banditry, is being revived,” Zakharova said.

These statements were issued in response to the tightening of US oil sanctions against Venezuela and the seizure of several tankers carrying the country’s crude oil.

Russia has previously condemned Washington’s actions and announced its firm support for the government of Nicolas Maduro.
