Anger and chaos in Dhaka after the death of Sharif Usman, the leader of the Bangladeshi protests

The death of Sharif Usman, a leader of the 2024 Bangladesh protests and a spokesman for the Manchu Revolution Group, has sparked a wave of anger and violence in the country’s capital.

Hadi, 32, who was a candidate in the February 2026 parliamentary elections, died in a Singapore hospital on Thursday. He had been shot by masked men on a motorbike in Dhaka last week.

Angry protesters attacked the offices of two prominent newspapers, Prothom Alo and the Daily Star, and set the buildings on fire.

Protesters also bulldozed Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party office in Rajshahi, and protests have spread to the cities of Chattogram and Khulna.

In a televised speech, the leader of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, called Hadi’s death an irreparable loss, announced special prayers and a day of mourning, and called for people to maintain peace.

The violence occurred ahead of the sensitive February elections, and Younis described it as a “planned attack to disrupt the elections.”
