India’s Bihar chief minister pulls down the hijab of a Muslim doctor

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of the Indian state of Bihar, pulled down the hijab (niqab) of a female Muslim doctor at the ceremony of distributing recruitment letters for Ayush doctors, a move that has drawn strong criticism from the opposition.

A video widely shared on social media shows Kumar pulling down the woman’s veil as he hands over the employment letter to her, with onlookers laughing as the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister of Bihar try to stop him.

The Congress party has called the act “evil” and demanded Kumar’s resignation.

Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal is also investigating whether the move is indicative of Kumar’s mental health.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the move as humiliating and said: “It is not permissible anywhere to pull down the niqab of a Muslim woman. The reality of Nitish Kumar, who was previously considered a secular leader, is being revealed.”
