UN Security Council differs views on Afghanistan from ‘constructive engagement’ to ‘widespread human rights violations’

In a late meeting of the Security Council on Afghanistan yesterday representatives of Russia, China, India, and the United States presented their views.

Vasily Nebenzia (Russia) The international community must engage in meaningful and constructive engagement with the Islamic Emirate without double standards and through dialogue based on trust.

Afghanistan cannot emerge from the crisis alone and needs collective, non-political support.

Fu Kong China) The situation in Afghanistan is “stable” but major humanitarian and counter-terrorism challenges remain. Interaction and dialogue with the Islamic Emirate must be strengthened to improve the situation.

India is a strong advocate of peace and stability in Afghanistan.

So far, more than 500 development projects in the health, infrastructure, and capacity building sectors have been implemented throughout Afghanistan, and this cooperation will continue.

US Representative: The people of Afghanistan face widespread human rights violations, severe restrictions on women, unemployment, and limited access to services.

Washington’s priority remains US national security, reducing terrorist threats from Afghan soil, and freeing detained American citizens.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not yet responded to these statements.
