Thailand’s precondition for a ceasefire with Cambodia or an end to Bangkok’s hostile actions

Sous Yara, a senior advisor to the Cambodian Prime Minister, announced in an interview with the media yesterday that Phnom Penh is ready to hold immediate bilateral talks with Bangkok, adding: “If the two sides agree to sit at the negotiating table and start communication, it would be a very good thing.”

In response, Thai Foreign Minister Marat Sihasa welcomed Cambodia’s proposal and stated that the precondition for a ceasefire was a complete end to hostile and provocative actions by Cambodia.

He stressed that Thailand is ready to listen to Cambodia’s views, but Cambodia must take the first step and show that it is truly willing to talk; what it can do now is stop what is being done.”

Border tensions between the two neighbors have a long history, and a peace agreement brokered by Donald Trump was signed in Kuala Lumpur last month, but clashes have flared up again.
