The most powerful solar flare of 2025 causes radio blackouts in Africa and Europe

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center announced that on November 11, a massive X5.1-class solar flare was released from sunspot AR4274, marking the most powerful solar outburst of 2025. The event resulted in an R3-level radio blackout in parts of Africa and Europe.

The flare sent a wave of X-rays and ultraviolet rays toward Earth, and scientists are investigating the possibility of a coronal mass ejection (CME) heading directly toward Earth.

The Space Weather Prediction Center warned that CMEs from the previous two flares are also on their way to Earth and may combine, which could create a G3-level geomagnetic storm.

Possible consequences include disruption of radio communications, power grids and widespread aurora borealis.

This event is one of the most powerful solar activity this year, indicating a high risk of space weather.
