Migrant ship sinks off Libyan coast, 42 missing and possible dead
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that a boat carrying 49 migrants capsized near the Al-Buri oil field off the northwestern coast of Libya, and after six days of searching, only seven people were rescued; another 42 migrants are believed to have died.
The incident was reported in an official IOM statement on Wednesday, November 12.
The rescued migrants were from Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon and Somalia.
This tragedy comes as Britain, Spain, and Norway yesterday called on Libya to close its migrant detention centers, which human rights organizations have described as places where refugees are tortured and even killed.
