Trump: Hamas leaders are smart and skilled negotiators; assertiveness was key to success
US President Donald Trump, in recent statements about Hamas leaders, said that they are smart people and good negotiators, and if they use this ability in the right direction, they can be very successful.
Trump made these remarks as the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement came into effect after two years of war, thanks to Washington’s mediation.
Trump added in an interview with Fox News: “I spoke a little harshly, and that’s what made it happen. You have to speak firmly because we’re dealing with a tough world. They’re tough people, but they’re also smart. They’re good negotiators.”
These statements by Trump, who had previously called Hamas a brutal threat, reflect his change of tone after the success of indirect negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Hamas officials have also welcomed Trump’s seriousness in the negotiations and said that this agreement could lead to lasting peace, although they emphasize international guarantees for the full implementation of the Israeli withdrawal.
