Ukraine targets Russia’s Luch Belgorod thermal power plant for second time in a week
Yesterday, for the second time in a week, Ukrainian forces targeted the Luch thermal power station in the Russian city of Belgorod with GMLRS guided missiles of the HIMARS system launched from Kharkiv.
The attack led to widespread power outages in the city of Belgorod and surrounding areas, forcing hospitals to use backup generators.
Cheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod region, confirmed that the attack on critical infrastructure caused significant disruptions to electricity supply, affecting more than 500,000 people.
Local Telegram channels reported that loud explosions were heard near the power plant and video footage of flames and thick smoke was released.
The plant, which supplies 36.3 percent of the heating needs of northern and central Belgorod, is part of Russia’s energy network, which has recently been the target of repeated attacks by Ukraine.
