Deadly youth protests in Morocco leave two dead and hundreds arrested
Reuters reported that two people were killed and several others injured in the city of Al-Qaliyah during anti-government youth protests in Morocco.
Local authorities announced that security forces were forced to open fire to prevent their weapons from falling into the hands of protesters.
The protests, which began on Sunday, were organized by an anonymous youth group called 212 Genz through social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and the Discord app, and were inspired by similar movements in Asia and Latin America.
Protesters are demanding improvements in the quality of education and public health, while the overall unemployment rate in Morocco is 12.8%, youth unemployment is 35.8%, and university graduate unemployment is 19%.
The protests, which spread to cities such as Wednesday night, with a total of 409 people arrested and 193 facing trial on charges including arson and attacks on security forces.
