Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of the interim Syrian government, met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting took place while Al-Sharaa was traveling to New York to address the General Assembly.
During this meeting, a reporter asked Al-Sharaa: “Will the US lift the sanctions?”
Al-Shara replied, referring to Rubio: “Ask him.” Al-Shara’s humorous response, which reflected the diplomatic tensions between Syria and the United States, attracted media attention.
Al-Shara, who is in New York accompanied by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Ibrahim Al-Alabi, is scheduled to speak on September 24.
This is the Syrian president’s first speech at the United Nations since 1967.
