US, Europe in talks to impose new sanctions on Russia

David O’Sullivan, the European Union’s representative for sanctions, met with US officials in Washington on Sunday, September 8, 2025, to discuss coordination for the imposition of new sanctions against Russia.

The talks follow Russia’s largest airstrike on Ukraine, which involved the firing of 810 drones and 13 missiles, killing at least four people and causing extensive damage to Kiev’s infrastructure, including the Cabinet of Ministers building.

US President Donald Trump threatened yesterday to impose more sanctions on Moscow if the Russian attacks continue.

This position was taken after his diplomatic efforts, including a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025, to bring the parties to the Ukrainian war to the negotiating table, failed.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant also emphasized in an interview with NBC that Washington is ready to increase pressure on Russia, but this requires the cooperation of European partners.
