Trump renames US Department of Defense to “Department of War”

On Friday (September 5, 2025), US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of the country’s Department of Defense to the Department of War.

According to the Sianan Network, this decision was made with the aim of reviving the historical name of this institution, which was used until the end of World War II (1947).

Trump had previously stated that the title Department of War more accurately reflected the agency’s mission.

The order allows the Pentagon to use the title “Department of War” in official correspondence and ceremonies and allows Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett to use the title “Secretary of War.”

However, a formal name change for the department requires congressional approval.

This move, whose costs for updating documents and signs are estimated to be millions of dollars, is part of Trump’s efforts to strengthen the image of American military authority.

This decision has met with mixed reactions among politicians and analysts.
