Macron: ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine after peace deal

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that European countries have completed a plan to develop security guarantees for Ukraine and are ready to provide these guarantees to Ukraine as soon as a peace agreement with Russia is signed.

“We European countries will implement the commitment we made at the NATO summit in Washington in July 2024; these guarantees are designed to protect Ukrainians against any possible future aggression,” Macron said at a news conference on Thursday (September 3).

These remarks came as peace talks between Ukraine and Russia continue to face challenges.

Macron did not provide further details on the nature of these guarantees, but diplomatic sources told Politico that the plan includes military, financial and diplomatic support for Ukraine and a boost to NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.

  • The move comes as part of Europe’s efforts to ensure Ukraine’s security after more than three years of war with Russia, which has left tens of thousands dead and million8s displaced.
