Fatal Gloria cable car accident in Portugal leaves 15 dead and 20 injured

At least 15 people were killed and at least 20 others injured after the famous Gloria cable car derailed in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, September 13, 2014, on one of the city center’s steep tracks, which connects one of Lisbon’s popular tourist attractions, the city center near Restoradores Square, to the historic Bairro Alto district.

According to the Guardian, the train’s main carriage overturned after derailing on a narrow street and hitting a building, destroying parts of its body and roof.

Portuguese emergency medical sources announced that three of the injured are in critical condition and the identities and nationalities of the victims have not yet been determined, but some of the dead were foreign nationals.

The exact cause of the accident is not yet known, but Portuguese authorities have launched an extensive investigation.

Rescue operations are ongoing, and passengers have attempted to escape from the wagon’s crevices to save themselves.
