Chinese and Indian leaders meet amid tensions with the US

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tianjin, China, on Sunday  to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The meeting came as both countries’ relations with the United States have soured due to rising trade tariffs and geopolitical tensions with Washington.

According to news sources, this is Modi’s first visit to China in seven years and took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

The two leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The meeting took place at a time when the United States has increased its tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent and relations between New Delhi and Beijing are being readjusted under pressure from Washington.

Modi is also scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit is scheduled to be held in two days from Sunday to Monday.
