US warships to be sent to the Caribbean to combat drug cartels
According to Reuters, the US government, on the orders of President Donald Trump, has dispatched more warships to the southern Caribbean Sea to combat Latin American drug cartels.
The guided-missile destroyer USS Lake Erie and the nuclear-powered fast attack submarine USS Newport News will arrive in the area early next week, two sources familiar with the matter said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The sources declined to provide further details about the mission but stressed that the move is part of the government’s efforts to counter national security threats posed by the activities of drug cartels in Latin America.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has described these actions as “illegal and an attempt to change the regime in his country” and has announced the deployment of 4.5 million paramilitary forces to defend Venezuelan territory.
