Syria and Israel sign security agreement
High-ranking Syrian sources told the Arab Independent that the Syrian interim government and the Israeli regime are set to sign a security agreement on 22th of August, with the mediation of the United States.
The agreement will come a day after the speech of Ahmed al-Sharaa (Jolani), the head of the Syrian interim government, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to sources, the agreement focuses on reducing tensions in southern Syria and restoring the 1974 separation of forces agreement, but is not expected to lead to normalization of relations or comprehensive peace between the two sides.
These negotiations are taking place at a time when the Zionist regime of Israel, after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government in December 2024, declared the 1974 agreement null and void and occupied parts of the Golan Heights.
Syrian officials have emphasized that Damascus seeks to maintain stability and prevent new conflicts, but the issue of retaking the Golan has not yet been raised in the negotiations.
