Progress at Alaska summit but still far from Ukraine peace deal

At the recent Alaska meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that progress had been made in the Ukrainian peace talks, but there were still serious obstacles to a final agreement.

Rubio emphasized that no agreement will be reached without the consent of Russia and Ukraine, and that US President Donald Trump is trying to persuade Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to attend a joint meeting.

Rubio warned that if current efforts to stop the war fail, the United States will take further measures against Russia, although he would prefer to avoid such measures.

He identified negotiations on borders and long-term security guarantees as key challenges, describing the Ukraine peace agreement as more difficult than all previous agreements.

Rubio emphasized that the United States acts as a mediator and that the decision on territorial concessions is left to Kiev.

Although the US and Russia have agreed on security guarantees for Ukraine, Rubio noted that the next steps depend on Kiev’s decisions.
