Massive explosion at Clairton, Pennsylvania steel plant a blow to the US military industry

A massive explosion occurred on Monday (August 11), 2025, at the U.S. Steel Company’s Clairton coking plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killing one person, injuring at least 20, and trapping several workers under the rubble.

The plant, which supplies about 10 to 15 percent of US steel production, plays a key role in producing parts for the US military’s vehicles, and the incident is an unexpected blow to the country’s industrialization and rearmament process.

According to local authorities, the explosion occurred at 10:51 a.m. local time, and thick smoke filled the sky over the Monongahela Valley region.

Rescue teams began rescue operations by sending 15 ambulances and several medical helicopters to the scene.
