The eruption of the Shinmoeda volcano in Japan with a 3-kilometer ash column
The Shinmoedake volcano, located in the Kirishima mountain range on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in Japan, erupted on Sunday morning, August 11, 2025 at 5:23 a.m. local time, sending a column of ash more than 3,000 meters into the sky above the crater.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that pyroclastic flows, hot gas and rock fragments, could fall within a 2km radius of the crater, and small volcanic rocks within a 14km radius northeast of it.
Ash clouds are moving northeast and are likely to reach the city of Kanabe in Miyazaki Prefecture.
The volcano has been intermittently active since June 27, 2025.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has maintained the alert level at level and advised residents to avoid approaching a 3-kilometer radius of the crater.
Moderate ash fall is expected in the cities of Kobayashi and Takaharu in Miyazaki and Kirishima
