NATO is considering deploying a joint German-Dutch military battalion in Pärnu, Estonia
According to the Estonian Radio and Television Network (ERR), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is considering the possibility of deploying a joint military battalion consisting of German and Dutch forces in the Estonian city of Pärnu.
Estonian Defense Minister Hannu Pokor described the plan as part of a broader NATO initiative to strengthen the military presence in the Baltic region, calling it an important and strategic step for the Estonian Defense Forces.
According to the report, the intended battalion will function as an advanced command headquarters and will consist of 100 to 200 personnel who will be responsible for logistical, security, and management duties.
The move comes as tensions in the Baltic region have increased and Estonia has taken several steps to strengthen its borders with Russia, including installing barriers and metal gates at border ports.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously described these actions and Tallinn’s increase in military capabilities as part of the militarization of the Baltic region.
