Escalating nuclear tensions between the US and Russia, exchange of threats between Trump and Medvedev
In recent days, verbal tensions between US President Donald Trump and Russian Security Council Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev have reached unprecedented levels, raising concerns about the possibility of a nuclear conflict.
The war of words began after Trump set 50-day and then 10-day deadlines for Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine or face heavy US tariffs on Russia and countries that buy its oil.
Medvedev responded in a harsh tone, mocking the deadlines and warning that any threat against Russia would be a step towards direct war with the United States.
He indirectly referred to Russia’s dead-hand nuclear system, which would automatically launch nuclear strikes if the country’s leadership were destroyed.
In response, Trump described Medvedev’s statements as provocative and foolish and ordered the deployment of two US nuclear submarines in strategic areas close to Russia.
