South Korea seeks to improve ties with North Korea through diplomacy and tourism

Ko Byung-sam, a spokesman for the Ministry of Unification of the two Koreas, said South Korea was seeking to improve relations with North Korea but declined to comment on specific details.

He confirmed that solo tours to North Korea do not violate international sanctions because tourism is one of the few sources of North Korea’s income that is not subject to UN sanctions.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has taken steps to ease tensions with Pyongyang, such as disabling border loudspeakers and stopping the sending of anti-North Korean newsletters.

He also plans to discuss with senior security officials further plans to resume talks with North Korea.

North Korea has recently launched the Wonsan coastal area to attract tourists, although the area is not currently open to foreign tourists.

These measures come as inter-Korean relations have reached their lowest point in recent years.
