Russia, Germany cancel military agreement amid Ukraine tensions

Russia has canceled its 30-year-old military-technical cooperation agreement with Germany due to Berlin’s hostile policy and the country’s widespread support for Ukraine.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin ordered his country’s Foreign Ministry to notify Germany of the end of the agreement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused Germany of brainwashing people to create hostility against Moscow, and the Kremlin has expressed concern over Germany’s threatening tone, including statements by the country’s defense minister about being prepared to confront Russian soldiers.

Germany, the second largest arms supplier to Ukraine after the United States, plans to increase its military budget to 153 billion euros by 2029 and has raised the issue of restoring compulsory military service.

Moscow, while rejecting speculation about an attack on NATO, considers the sending of Western weapons to Ukraine to be a factor in prolonging the war and increasing the risk of escalating the conflict.
