Former South Korean president arrested again for declaring martial law

A court in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, issued an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Seok-yol on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, on charges of attempting to establish martial law in December 2024.

This is the second time Yun has been arrested; he was previously arrested in January 2025 on charges of “rebellion” and abuse of power.

According to Yonhap News Agency, “Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok had requested Yoon’s re-arrest due to fears that he might destroy documents and evidence.”

The Seoul Central District Court granted the request, and Yoon was transferred to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang City, south of the capital.
