Arrest of the head of the “Ural Azerbaijan” organization by Russian security forces in Yekaterinburg
In what appears to be a response to recent tensions between Baku and Moscow, Russian security forces conducted an operation in the city of Yekaterinburg and arrested Shahin Shiklinsky, the head of the Azerbaijan-Urals organization.
The operation took place on Tuesday, 1 July, at a time when relations between Azerbaijan and Russia have been strained due to mutual accusations of espionage and reprisals.
According to reports on social media, the arrest was made in response to the arrest of two senior figures from the Sputnik news agency in Baku on charges of spying for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
Some sources have claimed that Shiklinsky, a prominent leader of the Azerbaijani community in the Urals region, was involved in activities including bribing Russian officials to expand Baku’s influence and collaborating with foreign entities such as Ukraine and Israel.
However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed by Russian authorities.
