According to the newspaper Die Welt, the US government plans to double the tariff on steel imports to the United States from the current 25% to 50%.
The European Union has also threatened to take countermeasures ahead of schedule.
The European Union has strongly criticized Trump’s announcement of new tariffs and threatened to respond before the summer.
A spokesman for the European Commission, which is responsible for EU trade policy, said in a statement in Brussels: “We deeply regret the announced increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by the United States from 25 to 50 percent.”
He stressed that this would undermine ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution to the trade dispute, create greater uncertainty for the global economy and increase costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
The European Union said in a statement that it was ready to impose countermeasures, possibly before July 14.
