French parliament approves first aid for dying law
The French parliament has approved the first phase of a bill on assisted dying.
This measure has been called an important step towards legalizing ending the lives of terminally ill patients in this country.
The bill was passed in the French National Assembly on Tuesday, May 27, with 305 votes in favor and 199 against.
Based on this law, patients with incurable and untreatable diseases can voluntarily end their lives under certain circumstances.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the approval of the bill, calling it an important step.
The bill will now be sent to the Senate for further consideration; given the lengthy legislative process in France, it could take months for a final vote.
According to the provisions of this law, people over the age of 18 who are French citizens or live in this country can request euthanasia if they suffer from an incurable and advanced illness and suffer from unbearable pain.
