Damascus Criminal Court Sentences Bashar al-Assad to Death in Absence
The Damascus Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a number of senior officials of the former regime to death in an absentia trial.
According to reports, Assad has been convicted of premeditated murder and involvement in killings, torture, and crimes related to the Syrian war; Atef Najib, the former head of the political security branch in Daraa, has also been sentenced to death in the same case.
This is the first death sentence against Bashar al-Assad since his ouster in December 2024 and his flight to Russia.
