Iran, US continue to exchange messages after suspension of quadrilateral talks in Switzerland

While the negotiating teams of Iran and the United States were supposed to resume the quadrilateral talks with the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan in Burgenstock, Switzerland, after a short break, the Iranian delegation refused to continue the negotiations in the quadrilateral format in response to Donald Trump’s statements and threats.

Despite the suspension of direct talks, efforts by Qatari and Pakistani mediators have continued, and the exchange of messages between Tehran and Washington is still ongoing.

Reports indicate that Iran protested at Sunday’s meeting over what it called the other side’s violation of its obligations in implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, especially regarding the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.

The Iranian delegation also called for accelerating the release of Iran’s frozen assets and the issuance of oil export exemptions, and emphasized that the start of negotiations on the nuclear file will be conditional on the full implementation of US commitments.

Sources close to the negotiations say that it is likely that in the coming hours, Qatari and Pakistani mediators will issue a joint statement on some issues related to the memorandum of understanding and the process of the talks.
