Putin’s conditional agreement to meet with Zelensky
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Thursday 21th of August that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but the meeting is subject to the preparation of a specific agenda and the resolution of key issues in advance.
Lavrov stressed that the agenda has not yet been finalized.
According to international media reports, Lavrov also said that Moscow has been flexible with and agreed to some of the proposals put forward by US President Donald Trump.
However, he explicitly referred to Zelensky’s legitimacy to sign any agreement, saying that this issue must be resolved before any negotiations because Zelensky’s presidential term ended due to the failure to hold elections in wartime conditions, and this could call into question the legitimacy of the agreements.
These remarks come after Putin had previously proposed a meeting in Moscow, an offer that Zelensky rejected and suggested other locations for talks.
