Today, Friday, July 11, 2025, the historic ceremony for the disarmament of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was held from 12:00 to 2:00 local time in the Dukan area near the city of Sulaymaniyah.
The ceremony, which marks a turning point in ending more than four decades of this group’s armed struggle with the Turkish government, was held in the presence of PKK representatives, politicians, intellectuals, and civil activists from the region.
According to news sources, PKK members arrived at the ceremony site through a narrow harbor and symbolically burned their weapons in a large pit.
Prominent PKK leaders Besseh Hozat and Mustafa Karasu were also present at the ceremony and laid down their weapons.
Representatives of the People’s Democracy and Equality Party (Dem Party) were also present to oversee the event.
The disarmament process is expected to be carried out in several stages and to be fully completed by September 2025, which is of great importance not only for Turkey but also for regional stability in Iraq and Syria.
