Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter, that the United States plans to reactivate a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and establish a military presence in the east of the island as part of a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland.
These two locations are Narsarsuaq and Mesterzweig; the Blue West One base in Narsarsuaq was closed after American activity in the 1950s; Mesterzweig is currently used by the Sirius dog sled patrol of the Danish Special Forces.
The security agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The text of the agreement has not yet been published, and its final details will not be clear until the signing.
The United States currently has the Pitofik space base in Greenland, and according to a Reuters report, about 150 American soldiers are stationed at the base.
