UAE’s top diplomat announces candidacy for UN Secretary-General

Lana Nusseibeh, a senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, announced her candidacy for the position of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations on Wednesday.

According to a Reuters report, the entry of the Emirati diplomat into the race has also brought a prominent candidate from the Middle East into the running for UN Secretary-General, a competition in which powerful members of the Security Council have so far failed to agree on a candidate.

Nusseibeh, who served as the UAE ambassador to the United Nations for more than a decade, told Reuters that in the face of increasing global crises, he would try to revive the organization’s role as an institution for resolving challenges through diplomacy.
