Argentine’s President Javier Migli has given Britain two weeks to halt activities related to the Sea Lion oil project near the Falkland Islands; otherwise, Buenos Aires will pursue the matter through international legal channels.
The Argentine presidency has announced that Milley has ordered the Foreign Ministry and the government’s legal teams to initiate an international arbitration process based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. If the activities continue, Argentina will request interim measures from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
The Sea Lion project is located north of the Falkland Islands and is being developed by the British company Rocks Per Exploration and the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum. Argentina considers the project to be an unauthorized exploitation of its resources, while Britain does not recognize Argentina’s sovereignty over the islands.
The dispute between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, continues, with the Sea Lion oil project becoming one of the new axes of the dispute.
