UN Special Representative for Global Education Gordon Brown has called for girls to be educated in Afghanistan, saying the international community has a “great responsibility” towards Afghan girls.
Brown has called on Muslim-majority countries and countries that interact with the Islamic Emirate to raise the issue of girls’ education in their discussions and not allow this issue to be marginalized.
At the same time, Irish Prime Minister Michel Martin, in his speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, called the situation of Afghan women and girls a “deep human rights crisis” and said that they were deprived of education, work, and participation in public life.
Martin emphasized that the international community should not just stand by and watch this situation and should continue to support Afghan women.
