Ali Al-Obaidli from Kuwait won the Royal Greenwich Observatory’s 2026 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition with his image of the “Silent Hunter” of the Shark Nebula, receiving a prize of £10,000.
The judges commended the image for its meticulous detail, artistic composition, and beautiful depiction of a less photographed nebula. Al-Obaidli is the first overall winner of the competition from Kuwait.
Also, “Nikolaos Strempolis”, a 15-year-old photographer from Greece, won the Young Astrophotography Award 2026 with his image of the “Mineral Moon”.
