Massive protests in Argentina against controversial government bill

Thousands of people in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, gathered in front of the Congress building to protest against the controversial property bill of the Javier Milla government as it was being considered in the Senate.

Labor unions, social organizations, and opposition groups say the bill is designed to benefit large investors, reduces legal protections for land, and accelerates the process of evicting residents to the detriment of vulnerable groups.

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters near the Capitol building.

Despite removing one of the bill’s controversial sections on foreign ownership of rural land, the plan still includes accelerating the process of evicting properties and changing laws related to acquisition and expropriation, and has faced widespread opposition.
