Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the massive influx of migrants into the Ceuta region as a violation and attack on Spain’s territorial integrity, and stressed that the government would defend its sovereignty and borders. According to reports, about 49,000 migrants have entered the region from the Moroccan border in recent days.
Meanwhile, dozens of migrants are returning to Morocco after entering Ceuta. Some of them have said that they did not have access to food in Ceuta or that they were deceived into entering the region, but other groups are still trying to reach Ceuta, and Moroccan forces have also intensified border controls.
Calling the Ceuta situation unacceptable, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the European Union will not allow illegal immigrants to enter. At the same time, Finland supported Italy’s proposal to remove Spain from the Schengen area, and the country’s Minister of the Interior claimed that Spain had failed to protect Schengen’s external borders.
