Financial Times :Afghanistan-Pakistan tension on the verge of escalating into wider conflict, world must act urgently

The Financial Times warned in an article that the sharp rise in tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan risks escalating into a wider conflict and that the international community must urgently re-engage with the region.

The publication emphasized that almost five years after the Islamic Emirate returned to power, global attention to Afghanistan has declined sharply, with restrictions on women and the deterioration of Kabul-Islamabad relations being the most prominent current issues.

The Financial Times noted that Pakistan’s relations with the Islamic Emirate have deteriorated sharply since 2021. Islamabad accuses Kabul of harboring militants responsible for domestic attacks, a claim that the Islamic Emirate has denied.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in violence, including airstrikes and border clashes, which have reportedly left more than a thousand dead and thousands more displaced. The deadliest incident was an airstrike on a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul, which killed hundreds.

The newspaper called Pakistan’s military policy ineffective and said that airstrikes alone cannot end militant activity and may destabilize South and Central Asia and turn Afghanistan back into a center of militant activity.

The Financial Times called on major powers, especially the United States and China, to play a more active diplomatic role. China can be an effective mediator due to its strategic interests.

In conclusion, he emphasized that the world’s indifference poses great dangers and that the continuation of the current situation could have catastrophic regional and global consequences.
