Japan donates $2 million to UNHCR for Afghan returnees
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that the Japanese government has provided $2 million to the agency to provide emergency assistance to Afghans returning from Iran and Pakistan and vulnerable host communities across Afghanistan.
The U.N. In a statement, HCR noted that in 2025 alone, more than 2.8 million Afghans returned to Afghanistan from neighboring countries, many of them with very little.
These people are facing urgent needs for shelter, food, livelihoods and support, particularly in communities that were already under severe pressure.
With this assistance, Japan will implement a project titled “Providing Emergency Assistance to Afghan Returnees from Iran and Pakistan, Together with Vulnerable Host Communities in Afghanistan” over 10 months of this year, and is set to support 116,310 people.
