Afghan migrant ship collides with Turkish coast guard off Mediterranean coast, 14 dead, several rescued

According to the Associated Press, on Monday 10th of March near the coast of Demri, in the province of Antalya, Turkey, a ship carrying Afghan migrants collided with a coast guard ship and capsized.

Turkish authorities announced that at least 14 migrants died as a result of the incident.

Antalya Governor Sahin Holosi said the migrant boat ignored warnings from the coast guard to stop and was maneuvering at high speed to escape, which led to a collision and the drowning of a number of passengers.

Coast Guard teams rescued 7 people from the water and transported them to health centers for treatment; 14 others who had made it to the beach were also arrested by gendarmerie forces.

Search and rescue operations to find possible missing people are continuing by land, sea and air.
