US President Donald Trump, in response to a question about the possibility of intervening in a new conflict between Pakistan and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said: “I will intervene, but I have a very, very good relationship with Pakistan. You have a great prime minister and a great general. I think Pakistan is doing a great job.”
Trump’s statements indicate implicit support for Islamabad against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and were made at a time when border tensions between the two countries have reached a peak in recent days, including mutual military operations and airstrikes.
Emphasizing his close ties with Pakistan’s leadership, Trump virtually avoided taking a direct stance against Islamabad, instead emphasizing Pakistan’s “extraordinary performance.”
The US Embassy in Kabul announced yesterday that it is closely monitoring the clashes, but so far no official position has been issued by Washington regarding support or mediation in this crisis.
