US forces withdrawing from northern Syria towards Iraq after Damascus reaches deal with Kurds

US military forces are withdrawing from northeastern Syria and moving towards Iraq after reaching an agreement with the new Syrian government to transfer control of Kurdish areas to Damascus forces.

This development comes after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reached an agreement with Damascus following recent clashes and military pressure from the Syrian transitional government headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The agreement includes a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of SDF forces from the front lines, the gradual integration of Kurdish forces into the Syrian army, and the transfer of control of cities and key infrastructure such as prisons, oil fields, and border ports to the central government.

The United States, which previously considered the SDF its main ally in the fight against ISIS, has now reduced its support for these forces and focused on cooperating with the new government in Damascus.

Washington has begun transferring thousands of ISIS prisoners from SDF-controlled prisons to Iraq, and reports indicate plans for a complete or significant withdrawal of American forces from Syria
