Trump: Denmark’s historical presence in Greenland does not mean ownership of the island
US President Donald Trump, in a controversial statement, questioned Denmark’s right to own Greenland, saying that the country’s mere historical presence on the island does not mean it owns it.
Trump said in his speech: “I love Denmark. They’ve been very kind to me and I’m a big fan of theirs. But just because they docked a ship there 500 years ago doesn’t mean they own the land. I’m sure many of our ships have gone there too.”
He further emphasized that he is not currently in direct negotiations to purchase Greenland, but the United States is preparing steps regarding this autonomous Danish territory, regardless of Copenhagen’s position.
Trump’s comments have once again raised the issue of ownership and strategic importance of Greenland, which has rich natural resources and an important geopolitical location. The Danish government has repeatedly denied any discussion of selling or changing ownership of Greenland.
