Russia nearly doubles liquefied gas exports to Afghanistan and Central Asia

Russia has almost doubled its exports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Afghanistan and the Central Asian republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan from January to November 2025 to 1.016 million tons, Reuters reported on Friday, citing trade sources.

This now accounts for about 36 percent of Russia’s total LNG exports, a significant increase from 19 percent in 2024.

Moscow has shifted its export route to Asian markets due to European restrictions stemming from the Ukraine war.

Afghanistan is the largest buyer of Russian liquefied gas in the region, and supplies to the country increased 1.5 times in the first 11 months of the year, reaching 418,000 tons.

Traders attribute the increase in part to a decline in Iranian exports due to US sanctions.
